On a record-breaking night at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, Gujarat Giants (GG) clinched a memorable four-run victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) in Match 4 of the TATA Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026. After starting their campaign with a win over UP Warriorz (UPW) on Saturday, the Ashleigh Gardner-led GG made it two wins out of two.
It was a game where experience and youth both shone brightly. Sophie Devine smashed the most runs in an over in WPL history en route to a breathtaking 95(42) and defended only seven runs off the final over with ball in hand. DC’s Nandni Sharma, playing just her second ever WPL game, became the first uncapped player to take a WPL hat-trick on her way to 5/33.
After GG were put in to bat first, Devine picked up from where she left off on Saturday. She went after the bowling from the get-go and smashed 4, 4, 6, 6, 6, 6 off Sneh Rana in the sixth over, bringing up a 25-ball fifty in the process and registering the most expensive over (32 runs) ever in the WPL. With Beth Mooney playing a supporting role, GG’s 80/0 was the second-highest powerplay total in the WPL.

Sree Charani broke a 94-run opening stand with a brilliant return reflex catch to dismiss Mooney, but Devine showed no signs of slowing down. She hit three sixes in that same over to move into the 90s off just 38 deliveries. Just when it seemed Devine would break her own joint-record of the highest individual WPL score (99) and register the first-ever hundred, she ended up miscuing one to short fine-leg off Nandni’s bowling and walked back for a magnificent 95(42), including eight sixes.
A few more quick wickets, including another good catch by DC captain Jemimah Rodrigues this time, helped DC fightback.

However, GG were still in a strong position at 172/5 after 16 overs. Captain Ashleigh Gardner continued her fine form with 49(26), and GG looked set for a big finish at 201/6 after 18 overs. Nandni had other ideas, though.
Bowling the final over of the innings, she became the first bowler to take four wickets in an innings in the WPL, the fourth to take a hat-trick with consecutive wickets of the last three deliveries of the innings, and the first uncapped bowler to do so. Nandni ended with bowling figures of 5/33 and the Purple Cap (seven wickets in two innings), as GG were bowled out for 209.

The momentum provided to DC by Nandni was carried on by another power-packed opener, Lizelle Lee. Despite losing Shafali Verma early and being behind the asking rate at 47/1 after 6 overs, Lee was not deterred. With support from fellow South African Laura Wolvaardt, Lee took matters into her own hands.
She took on the likes of Renuka Singh, Georgia Wareham, and Devine with ease, smashing boundaries over after over. She reached 50 off 33 deliveries, and at one stage, DC were placed strongly at 127/1 after 14 overs.

Racing along to 86(53), it seemed Lee would break the hundred-jinx. But it was not be as she hit one straight to long-on off the next delivery with Kashvee Gautam getting the big scalp.
Wolvaardt then came into her own, smashing 47 off 15 deliveries at one stage, including three fours and a six off Gardner’s 18th over. With 41 runs coming off the 18th and 19th overs and Jemimah also getting into the act, DC had it under control with only seven needed off the last over.
However, Devine had another memorable performance in store, conceding just two runs and dismissing both Jemimah (15 off 9) and Wolvaardt (77 off 38) to guide GG towards a special table-topping victory.
